Delay Your Period: Your Cycle, On Your Schedule

The wedding, the flights, the exam, the big race — booked months ago. Your period, unhelpfully, has other ideas. Norethisterone is a straightforward tablet that holds your period back until you’.”‘”.’re ready for it, and a registered Irish doctor can prescribe it to your pharmacy after a quick, private check — €34.99, seven days a week. And if you’.”‘”.’re already on the pill, there’.”‘”.’s an even simpler trick.

The simple version of how it works

A period starts when a hormone (progesterone) drops at the end of your cycle. Norethisterone tops that hormone up, so the drop — and the period — waits. Keep taking it and your period stays away; stop, and it arrives a couple of days later.

  • Dose: norethisterone 5mg, three times a day.
  • Start: 3 days before your period is due.
  • Continue: through the days you want to be clear (usually up to ~10–14 days).
  • Your period returns: about 2–3 days after the last tablet.

One thing to be clear about

This is not contraception. Delaying your period with norethisterone does nothing to prevent pregnancy — keep using your usual method. And if there’.”‘”.’s any chance you’.”‘”.’re already pregnant, do a test first, because it shouldn’.”‘”.’t be taken in pregnancy.

On the pill already? Skip the tablet entirely

If your contraceptive is a combined (oestrogen) pill, you can usually just start your next pack without the 7-day break and run them together — your period is pushed back with no extra medicine and no gap in protection. Most combined pills allow this; a doctor will confirm for your brand. (The progestogen-only mini-pill works differently — just ask.)

Is it right for you?

For most healthy women, yes, for the occasional short delay. The quick consultation checks the few situations where it’.”‘”.’s avoided or needs care — a personal or strong family history of blood clots, certain heart, liver or clotting conditions, unchecked unusual bleeding, or a chance of pregnancy. Being a smoker over 35 or getting migraines usually doesn’.”‘”.’t rule out a short course — the doctor will weigh it up with you.

What to expect

  • Often nothing much; some notice mild bloating, breast tenderness, headache, mood changes or lower sex drive — all temporary.
  • A little spotting is common and doesn’.”‘”.’t mean it failed.
  • It’.”‘”.’s for occasional use. Wanting to skip every month is a cue to talk about longer-term options instead.
Stop and get emergency care (999/112) for painful calf/leg swelling, sudden chest pain or breathlessness, coughing up blood, or a sudden severe headache with weakness, slurred speech or vision loss — rare warning signs of a clot.

How the online consultation works

  1. Book a time above — same-day slots are usually available, seven days a week.
  2. Quick check by phone — a few questions about your health, your event and your cycle timing.
  3. Prescription to your pharmacy — norethisterone with clear start/stop timing, or the pill-skip plan if that suits you better.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need to start the tablets?

Norethisterone is started about 3 days before your period is due, and taken through the days you want to stay period-free. So the practical rule is: know roughly when your period is expected, and have the tablets ready with a few days to spare. Booking a week or two ahead of your trip or event is the stress-free way to do it.

Is this the same as being on the pill?

No. Period-delay norethisterone is a short-term tablet taken only around your event, and it does NOT prevent pregnancy. If you already take the combined pill, you usually don’t need it at all — you can run two packs together and skip the break, which delays your period with no extra medicine and keeps you protected. We’ll tell you which applies to you.

How long can I hold my period off?

Typically up to around 10–14 days at a time — plenty for a holiday, a wedding week or exams. It’s designed for the occasional clash, not every single month. If you find you want to skip periods routinely, that’s a sign to talk about continuous contraception instead, which does the job long-term.

Could it stop me getting pregnant in future?

No — it has no effect on future fertility. It’s out of your system within days of stopping; your period comes 2–3 days later and your next cycle runs as normal.

What might I feel while taking it?

Most people notice little or nothing. Some get mild bloating, breast tenderness, a headache, mood changes or a lower sex drive — all of which ease off once the course finishes. A bit of spotting can happen even while taking it and doesn’t mean it’s not working. Anything more concerning (calf pain/swelling, chest pain, breathlessness) means stop and seek urgent care.

Is it safe for me?

For most healthy women, yes, for short-term use. It’s avoided in pregnancy and used with care if you have a history of blood clots or certain heart, liver or clotting conditions — which is exactly what the quick consultation checks before prescribing. Smokers over 35 and women with migraine can usually still use it for a short delay; the doctor will confirm.
