Combined pill vs progestogen-only pill (POP)

The combined pill (oestrogen + progestogen) is generally more cycle-controlling but is contraindicated for some women — those with migraine with aura, smokers over 35, BMI over 35, or a personal history of VTE. The progestogen-only pill (mini-pill, e.g. desogestrel) is suitable in many of those groups and is taken daily without a break.

I smoke and I am 36 — can I still take the combined pill?

No — the combined pill is contraindicated for smokers over 35. We can switch you to a progestogen-only pill or recommend an alternative.

What if I miss a pill?
