Who is eligible

GLP-1 receptor agonists for weight loss are appropriate for adults with BMI ≥ 30, or BMI ≥ 27 with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, or obstructive sleep apnoea. We will not prescribe for cosmetic weight loss or in BMI < 27.

What we discuss in the first consultation

• Medical history, including thyroid, pancreas, and gallbladder concerns
• Realistic expectations — typical weight loss, plateau, and what happens when treatment stops
• Cost (medications can be expensive and are not generally HSE-reimbursed for weight indication alone)
• Lifestyle plan — these medications work best alongside dietary and activity change

Safety

GLP-1 medicines have well-described side-effects (nausea, vomiting, gallbladder issues, rare pancreatitis). They are contraindicated in pregnancy and in personal/family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2.
