What are GLP-1 receptor agonists?

GLP-1 receptor agonists are injectable medications that mimic a natural gut hormone. They slow stomach emptying, reduce appetite, and improve insulin response. Ozempic (semaglutide) is licensed in Ireland for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy (the higher-dose semaglutide) is licensed for weight management; Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is licensed for both indications.

Who is eligible

For weight management, eligibility typically applies to adults with a BMI ≥ 30, or BMI ≥ 27 with a weight-related condition (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea). They are not appropriate for cosmetic weight loss.

What they cost in Ireland (2026)

For type 2 diabetes, Ozempic / Mounjaro may be reimbursed under DPS or HTI schemes. For weight management alone, Wegovy and Mounjaro are usually private cost — typically €170–€280 per month depending on dose and pharmacy. The HSE generally does not reimburse weight-indication GLP-1s in 2026.

Side effects to expect

• Nausea, vomiting, indigestion (most common, usually settles after 2–3 weeks at each dose)
• Constipation or diarrhoea
• Gallbladder issues
• Rare but serious: pancreatitis, severe gastrointestinal disturbance

Contraindications include personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, and pregnancy.

What happens when you stop
