When to use this service vs ED

Use online consultation for: a child who is unwell but feeding, drinking, alert, and arousable, with normal breathing pattern. We can assess fevers, viral illnesses, ear pain, mild rashes, mild gastro, conjunctivitis, threadworms, head lice, and similar.

⚠ Go to the Emergency Department or call 112/999 if your child has any of these:

A non-blanching rash (does not fade when pressed with a glass)
Severe difficulty breathing, blue lips, grunting, or chest indrawing
Unresponsive, floppy, or unusually drowsy
Refusing all fluids and very dry / no wet nappies for >8 hours
Seizure or fever in a baby under 3 months

Frequently asked questions

What age children do you see?

Children from 6 months to 16 years. Newborns under 3 months should be seen in person — call your usual treating doctor or attend ED.

Does a parent or guardian need to be present?

Yes, always. The consenting adult must be present for the entire consultation.

Can you prescribe antibiotics for my child?

Yes, where appropriate — for example confirmed otitis media, strep throat, or urinary tract infection. We follow Irish antimicrobial stewardship guidelines.

Can you assess a rash by photo?

Yes for non-urgent rashes. For any non-blanching rash (suspected meningococcal), call 112/999 immediately — do not wait for an online consultation.

Is this covered by health insurance?

Many Irish health insurers reimburse online consultations — check with your insurer. We provide a payment receipt suitable for claim submission.

How much is it?
