Morning After Pill in Ireland — Choices, Timing, and Effectiveness
A clear, non-judgmental guide to emergency contraception in Ireland: which pill, how soon, and what to do next.
What it is
Emergency contraception (“the morning after pill”) is a hormonal medication taken after unprotected sex to reduce the chance of pregnancy. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible.
Two main options
- Levonorgestrel (Norlevo, Plan B) — effective up to 72 hours; most effective in the first 24h. Available without prescription.
- Ulipristal acetate (EllaOne) — effective up to 120 hours; generally more effective than levonorgestrel around ovulation and at higher BMI.
The most effective option
The copper IUD, fitted within 5 days of unprotected sex, is more effective than either oral option (over 99%) — and provides ongoing contraception. Available through HSE family-planning clinics and some private practices.
What about your usual contraception
If you are on a hormonal pill and missed pills caused the risk, follow your missed-pill rules. Ulipristal can interact with hormonal contraception — restart hormonal contraception 5 days after taking ulipristal. Levonorgestrel does not have this interaction.
What to do next
- Pregnancy test if your period is more than 7 days late
- STI screening if there was any risk
- Discuss ongoing contraception — many options are more effective than EC
