Medications & Prescriptions
10.1 General Rules
- Prescriptions are issued solely at the doctor's discretion
- A consultation does not guarantee a prescription
- Prescriptions are sent only to pharmacies in the Republic of Ireland
- Medications are for personal use only and must not be shared
- Depending on your symptoms and any request for a prior or repeat prescription, your doctor may ask you to provide details of your pharmacy and your registered GP, and may share and confirm relevant information with your GP and pharmacist where necessary.
10.2 What We Can and Cannot Prescribe
Whether any medicine is prescribed is always a clinical decision for the doctor, made only after an appropriate assessment. A consultation never guarantees a prescription.
Medicines we may prescribe only after clinical assessment (and only where suitable for remote care) include everyday treatments such as antibiotics and skin, respiratory and women’s-health medicines and, subject to eligibility, screening and monitoring, antidepressants (SSRIs) for anxiety, hormone replacement therapy (HRT), weight-management medicines, and — in strictly limited circumstances — a short course of a sleeping tablet.
We never prescribe on this platform, in any circumstances:
- Schedule 2 and Schedule 3 controlled drugs (for example morphine, oxycodone, methylphenidate)
- ADHD stimulant medicines
- Any medicine to treat an existing dependence, or to support withdrawal or tapering
- Any medicine the doctor judges unsafe to prescribe without an in-person examination or ongoing specialist oversight
We prescribe the following only in strictly limited circumstances, and never at a first consultation:
- Schedule 4 controlled drugs — for example a short course of a sleeping tablet, or a benzodiazepine such as diazepam, where clinically justified
- Codeine-containing painkillers and tramadol — as a short course, or as a renewal where you provide valid proof of a prior prescription (see 11.2)
In every such case: a small quantity, no repeat, a shorter prescription validity (around 28 days), and we may contact and share the prescription with your GP. Requesting a controlled drug by name is not a reason to prescribe it. We do not prescribe controlled drugs to anyone with a current or past dependence, or where there are signs of misuse or diversion.
These lists are not exhaustive and our clinical policies may change. If a request cannot be met, the doctor will explain why and, where appropriate, suggest a safer alternative or advise you to see your own GP.
10.3 Repeat Prescriptions
Repeat prescriptions require a new consultation or approved prescription request. A doctor may request evidence of prior prescription or previous use of the requested medication before issuing any repeat prescription. Issuance of any repeat prescription remains entirely at the doctor's clinical discretion.
10.4 Weight-Management (GLP-1) Medicines
Weight-management medicines (such as semaglutide/Wegovy or tirzepatide/Mounjaro) are prescribed only where you meet the medical eligibility criteria (including a qualifying body-mass index), pass a safety and eating-disorder screening, and can verify your height and weight. Treatment requires ongoing monitoring and regular review, is not suitable for everyone, and weight is commonly regained if it is stopped. We do not prescribe Ozempic for weight loss (it is licensed in Ireland for type 2 diabetes only), and we do not supply medicines from unlicensed or online sources — you should never use these.
We do not prescribe these medicines to anyone under 18, to anyone with type 1 diabetes, to anyone who is pregnant, breastfeeding or actively trying to conceive, to anyone with a current or past eating disorder, or where there is a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2.
The body-mass-index thresholds we apply are 2.5 kg/m² lower for people of South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean family background, reflecting higher cardiometabolic risk at the same BMI.
If you take an oral contraceptive, tirzepatide (Mounjaro) can make it less reliable. You will be advised to use an additional method of contraception for a period after starting treatment and after each dose increase. If you are planning a pregnancy, tirzepatide should be stopped at least one month, and semaglutide at least two months, beforehand.
Treatment is reviewed against progress. If you have not lost at least 5% of your body weight over the expected period, treatment is normally stopped rather than continued. Tell any surgeon or anaesthetist that you are taking one of these medicines before a planned procedure.
10.5 Self-Assessment Tools
Our website may offer self-check or eligibility tools (for example symptom or suitability questionnaires). These are for general information only. They are not a medical diagnosis, do not create a doctor–patient relationship, and do not entitle you to any particular prescription or outcome. Only a doctor, after a consultation, can assess you and decide on treatment.
10.6 Menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy
HRT is prescribed only after an assessment, and only where it is suitable for remote care.
Information you must be able to provide. We cannot prescribe HRT without a recent blood-pressure reading (a home or pharmacy reading is acceptable), your height and weight, your smoking status, the date of your last period, and your cervical screening status. If you cannot provide these, the consultation cannot result in an HRT prescription.
Blood pressure. If your blood pressure is 160/100 or higher we will not prescribe HRT until it has been managed, and will ask you to see your GP first.
When we will not prescribe, and will refer instead. We do not prescribe systemic HRT where there is current, past or suspected breast cancer, another known or suspected oestrogen-dependent cancer, or another absolute contraindication identified during the assessment. These need your GP or a specialist menopause clinic.
Age. If you are under 40 with menopausal symptoms we will not prescribe remotely — this may indicate premature ovarian insufficiency, which needs investigation and specialist input. Between 40 and 45, blood tests may be required before we can start treatment.
How we prescribe. Patches, gels and sprays (transdermal HRT) are our default route. We do not prescribe testosterone on this platform. HRT requires ongoing review, normally at least annually. HRT is not a contraceptive.
10.7 Isotretinoin (Roaccutane)
Isotretinoin is provided through a dedicated consultation with a doctor who holds a postgraduate qualification in dermatology. It is normally considered only where acne is severe or scarring and has not responded to prescription creams and a course of antibiotics.
Pregnancy — read this before booking. Isotretinoin causes severe harm to an unborn baby and must never be taken in pregnancy. If you can become pregnant, reliable contraception and pregnancy testing before, during and after the course are conditions of treatment, not suggestions. If you are unwilling or unable to meet them, isotretinoin cannot be prescribed to you.
This is a monitored treatment, not a one-off prescription. It requires blood tests before starting and during treatment, regular review appointments, and a course that normally runs over several months. Prescriptions are issued in limited quantities with a short validity, and continuing treatment depends on attending the reviews.
Mental health. Tell the doctor about any history of depression, anxiety or mood change before starting, and report any change in mood promptly during treatment.
The doctor may conclude that your acne does not require isotretinoin, or that you need assessment by a consultant dermatologist instead. Booking this consultation does not guarantee that isotretinoin will be prescribed.
Controlled Drugs
11.1 Prescribing Conditions
Some medicines are “controlled drugs” under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2017. Where a controlled drug (for example a short course of a Schedule 4 sleeping tablet) is clinically appropriate, it is prescribed only under strict conditions: never at a first consultation, only in a small quantity, with no repeat, and typically valid for a shorter period (around 28 days). We may contact, and share the prescription with, your GP. Requesting a controlled drug by name is not a reason to prescribe it, and such requests may be declined. We do not prescribe controlled drugs to anyone with a current or past dependence, or where there are signs of misuse or diversion.
Sick Notes & Medical Certificates
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Backdating | Not backdated except in exceptional circumstances |
| Extensions | Cannot be issued based solely on a prior consultation — requires new clinical assessment |
| Maximum Duration | 7 days |
| Free Period | If requested during or within 36 hours of consultation |
| Fee After Free Period | €10 |
| Diagnoses | Employer sick notes do not include diagnoses |
| Sick Note & Fit-to-Work Certificate | These certify opposite things — that you are unfit, and that you are fit to return — and each requires its own clinical assessment. They cannot be issued from the same consultation. Obtaining both requires two separate appointments and two separate clinical reviews, on separate occasions. Booking a single consultation intending to obtain both does not entitle you to a refund. |
| Insurance & Travel Claim Reports | Where you consulted us during an illness, we can provide a written medical report for a travel or other insurance claim, based on that consultation. This is a paid service, separate from the consultation itself. |
| What a Report Can Confirm | The date and type of your consultation, the symptoms you reported, the doctor’s clinical impression, and the advice or treatment given — as recorded at the time. |
| What a Report Cannot Confirm | Our consultations are remote, so no physical examination is carried out and no examination findings can be reported. We are not your general practitioner and hold no prior medical records, so we cannot state whether a condition was pre-existing. |
| Retrospective Certification | We can only report on a consultation that actually took place during the relevant illness. We cannot certify an illness, or fitness or unfitness to travel, for any date or period that was not assessed by us. Booking a consultation after the event in order to obtain such a certificate does not entitle you to one, nor to a refund. |
| Insurers’ Own Forms | Where your insurer requires its own form to be completed, we will do so only where we consulted you during the relevant illness, and only in respect of the matters set out above. Sections requiring a physical examination, your prior medical history, or an opinion on a period we did not assess will be marked as not applicable to a remote consultation. |
| Accuracy of Reports | A report states only what the treating doctor can support from the clinical record. Wording will not be altered to improve the prospects of a claim, and a request to do so may be declined. |
| Report Fees & Outcome | The fee is payable for the preparation of the report, not for any particular outcome. Each insurer applies its own criteria and we cannot guarantee that a report will be accepted. |
| Consent & Release | Medical information is released only with your explicit consent. Reports are issued to you, to forward to your insurer, unless you direct us otherwise in writing. |

Cancellation, Rescheduling & Refunds
Patient Cancellation
- Free cancellation 6 hours or more before consultation

- No refund once a prescription, medical certificate or fitness certificate has been issued, or once the consultation has taken place. This applies where you have changed your mind, are dissatisfied with the clinical outcome, or the document does not say what you had hoped. This does not affect your statutory rights where the service was not supplied with reasonable care and skill — for example where the consultation did not take place, or a document was issued in error.

Changes to These Terms

23. Communications & Marketing
We will send you service (“transactional”) messages that are necessary to provide your care — for example booking confirmations, appointment reminders, payment and prescription notifications, and secure links to your records. These are part of the service and continue for as long as you use it.
We may also send occasional non-essential messages, such as a request to review your experience, a reminder that a follow-up is due, or an update about our services. You can opt out of these at any time using the unsubscribe link in the email, by asking our support team, or by contacting us at support@doconcall.ie. Opting out of non-essential messages does not affect the service messages needed for your care.
24. Your Patient Portal & Documents
Documents issued to you (such as prescriptions and certificates) are generated electronically. Prescriptions are sent securely to your chosen pharmacy, so you do not normally need to bring a copy yourself. You can view your bookings and documents in your secure patient portal, reached from the links in your confirmation and reminder emails, or by requesting a fresh secure link from the patient-portal page. Any patient copy of a prescription you download is watermarked “patient copy” and is for your reference only. Keep your portal links private — they give access to your personal health information.

Telemedicine scope, limitations & complaints
This section supplements the main DoxOnCall terms of service with telemedicine-specific clauses required by Irish regulatory practice.
Scope of practice
DoxOnCall consultations are delivered by IMC-registered Online Doctors operating within the scope of practice permitted under the Medical Council's Guide to Professional Conduct & Ethics. Our clinicians:
- Hold current general registration with the Medical Council of Ireland (IMC)
- Provide telemedicine consultations within their assessed scope of practice
- Do not hold the specialist MICGP credential — for ongoing complex primary care we will refer you to your usual treating doctor
- Will decline a consultation, prescription, or documentation when it is clinically inappropriate online — in which case the consultation fee is refunded
Limitations of telemedicine
Telemedicine is not appropriate for every clinical situation. We will not provide care online for, and you must seek in-person care for:
- Medical emergencies — call 112 / 999 immediately
- Conditions requiring physical examination (most chest, abdominal, joint, neurological cases)
- Initiation or repeat prescription of controlled drugs (Schedule 2 / 3 — opioids, benzodiazepines, ADHD stimulants)
- Suspicious moles or skin lesions requiring biopsy or dermoscopy
- Acute mental-health crisis — call 112 / 999 or Samaritans on 116 123
- Statutory medical examinations (HGV / PSV drivers, pilots, divers)
- Antenatal, intrapartum, or postpartum complications
Sick certificates — important Department of Social Protection (DSP) caveat
Consultation fee and refund policy
- Standard fee: €34.99 per consultation, payable at booking
- Full refund if the consultation cannot proceed for technical reasons attributable to us
- No refund if, after assessment, the Online Doctor declines on clinical or regulatory grounds to provide the requested service or prescription (including controlled drugs, which are never prescribed) — the fee covers the clinical assessment itself
- Cancellations more than 6 hours before the slot: full refund
- No-show or cancellation within 6 hours of the slot: fee retained
- Documentation re-issue (minor wording correction): no additional charge
Geographic scope
DoxOnCall serves patients physically located in the Republic of Ireland at the time of their consultation. We do not provide care to patients located in Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom, or other jurisdictions — those patients must use a service licensed in their own jurisdiction.
Complaints
If you are not satisfied with any aspect of the service, please follow the DoxOnCall complaints procedure. You always retain the right to escalate independently to the Medical Council of Ireland, the Health Information & Quality Authority, or the Data Protection Commission as appropriate.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Ireland. Any dispute is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Irish courts.
