Waist-to-Height Ratio Calculator — Ireland

Waist-to-height ratio is a simple, reliable indicator of central obesity and metabolic risk — often more useful than BMI alone.

Why this matters

Central (abdominal) fat is metabolically active and more strongly linked with cardiovascular and metabolic disease than fat in other locations. Waist-to-height ratio captures this in a single number.

The rule

"Keep your waist less than half your height." A ratio under 0.5 is associated with lower metabolic risk; above that, risk increases.

How to measure waist correctly

  • Stand upright, breathe out gently
  • Find the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone
  • Tape should be snug but not compressing the skin

Waist-to-Height Ratio

A simple screening indicator — not a substitute for clinical assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How does this compare to BMI?
BMI does not distinguish where fat is. Two people with the same BMI can have very different metabolic risk. Waist-to-height adds central-fat information.
Where should I measure my waist?
Halfway between the bottom rib and top of hip bone — not at the navel.
Is this validated?
Yes — multiple meta-analyses show it predicts metabolic risk better than BMI alone.
What if my ratio is high?
Speak to your usual treating doctor or an Online Doctor about lifestyle, dietary, and (where appropriate) medication options.
